１９７６年６月１６日，南非約翰尼斯堡市郊黑人聚居的索韋托區（Soweto），數千名黑人中學生為抗議南非白人統治當局強行規定在黑人學校用南非荷蘭語（起源于荷蘭移民布爾人，是南非少數白人統治者使用的語言），而不准用非洲人語作為教學用語舉行大規模示威遊行。 南非種族主義當局出動上千名軍警，進行血腥鎮壓，176人死亡，1228人受傷，許多人被逮捕。為了追念喪生者與示威者的勇氣，聯合國從1991年開始以這個日子為「國際非洲兒童日」。
